Then, later on I was looking at this lady's website and saw that she had manifestos for sale. For nearly $900, she would work with you on creating your very own personalized manifesto. This led to the question:<br />

WTF is a manifesto and why would a person pay $900 to create one?<br />
<br />
So, last night, I decided to ask Google, since Google knows EVERYTHING. Google replied:<br />

Then, I did some more digging and I found an article on one of my favorite <a href="http://www.artofmanliness.com/2012/02/13/how-and-why-to-write-your-own-personal-manifesto/" target="_blank">websites</a> that started like this:<br />

I'd been a fan of this for quite some time but never knew that it was a manifesto. It was just some inspirational words...but then again, essentially that's what a manifesto is. You've probably seen this, right? (And duh to me because it says MANIFESTO in the fine print)</div>

The "rules" for writing the manifesto, as I understand them, are as follows:</div>

<li>Determine what's important to you - the types of behaviors and actions that you think make you YOU. What inspires you? What do you want? What will help you be a better person to yourself and others? What do you stand for?</li>
<li>It should be filled with definitive statements - <b>DO, STOP, DON'T, I WILL, I MUST</b>, etc. None of that "maybe/should/kinda/sorta" stuff.</li>
<li>It should be something that you can read each day. Preferably in the morning to get your day started and maybe at night before you go to bed to remind you who you are.</li>
</ul>

Your manifesto can and should be a part of your brand - YOU, the brand. Maybe it's the replacement of the old school mission statement that large companies had (but probably rarely followed). </div>

In life, and business, we are required to jump through some hoops in order to accomplish our goals - no matter what those goals are. That being said, I believe that it's important to know what you're willing (or not willing) to do in order to seal the deal.<br />

Over the last couple of months, I've been figuring out the answers to that question myself.<br />
<br />
I've been dabbling with the idea of going back into the employment sector, as opposed to being an entrepreneur. In my business, I don't hold any of the clients I work with to any long-term contracts. People use my services for a minimum of one-month at a time and then if they don't need anything else for a while, they don't use my service. I don't have a problem with offering people that level of freedom; however, it's not always in the best interest of my bottom-line. The flip-side of that is that I would NEVER want anyone to pay for anything they aren't using or don't need, simply because they're contractually obligated to do so.<br />

But I digress.<br />

Several months ago, I started putting my "feelers" out there to see what type of opportunities were available for someone with my level of experience as a Personal/Executive Assistant.<br />
<br />
Recently, I found a start-up accelerator that was looking for an Office Manager and I applied for the position. I immediately received a phone call to say that they were interested in my resume and I was pretty excited. I think the idea of working for a company that is helping innovate technology is pretty cool.<br />

I wrote a SPECTACULAR cover letter for the position:<br />

The cover letter was a winner. I had several follow-up calls about the position and we were waiting to schedule me for an in-person interview. The HR person was very communicative, so when there was a week in between where I didn't hear from her, I reached out, again. I wanted to make sure my level of interest was clear and I think it's important to re-iterate interest, even when they haven't said anything. Plus, no news is good news...meaning that they hadn't filled the job.</div>

I was told by the HR person that she was fully in support of my application; however, the CEO had started interviewing people with more industry-specific experience.</div>

Look - some jobs require industry-specific knowledge and expertise, like, medical or legal positions. This particular position doesn't really require anything that a good Google search can't provide.</div>

So, as an "outside-the-box" thinker, I decided to reach out to the CEO directly. I found him on LinkedIn, signed up for a free 30-day premium account, and sent him an InMail message that further emphasized my interest in the position and why. About 15 minutes later, I got a phone call from the HR rep and I'll admit that for a split-second I was a little apprehensive about answering. What if she's mad that I circumvented her? Then, I decided I'd just own my decision because at the end of the day, no matter how supportive and #TeamNikki she is, there are some things I have to do for myself to represent myself.</div>

Turns out, the CEO wanted to interview me the next day. I was excited! </div>

A few hours later, she called me back and said that he had a project he wanted me to work on as part of the interview process, to give a feel for hat it would like to work together and it would take about 5 hours. I asked if this is something he was doing with all the candidates and she said it was. I initially agreed, but later, I didn't like the way that felt in my gut.</div>

I went to the interview bright and early the next morning and it was just like I thought it would be - it's a laid-back, open floor plan in a very hipster-chic office setting, a place I could ultimately see myself enjoying! </div>

The interview was very informal and we talked about me, more than my resume, which was refreshing. He asked me to review a document for him, which took all of 5 minutes or so, and provide him with feedback. He said my feedback was really great.</div>

Turns out, there wasn't a 5 hour project for me to work on and he said that when they had something available, they'd call me back to come do it. Well, here's the thing about that...if he's not compensating people for their time, it's possibly illegal and definitely unethical. If it was a test of my capabilities as an EA, it wouldn't need to be a new assignment for each applicant...they'd just recycle the assignment/project for each person and see how each candidate handles it. The fact that they're using an employment candidate to work on a live project for them for free and then finalizing the project with the work they've obtained feels pretty sketchy.</div>

I decided to write a follow-up letter to the interview, completely from the memory of our conversation, that let him know that I heard the pain points that he expressed and outlined what I feel like I can specifically bring to the role. I wanted to be sure to impress upon him that I know how to <b>GET SHIT DONE</b>!</div>

For me, that's where it stops. I'm not going back at a later date to work for free on some project. I wrote a kick-ass cover letter, I gave a kick-ass interview, and I wrote a kick-ass follow-up letter. <b>THAT'S ALL YOU GET</b>! If you want more, <b>HIRE ME</b>!</div>

What I'm saying is, we ALL have to decide when the cost of admission for something we want is too high. There clearly are candidates who will work for free because they want the job that bad...but, guess what...he got their free work and he kept looking. He didn't stop the process and say "You did a great job for us for free, we'd like to hire you right away." </div>

Maybe he hasn't fully decided on what he's looking for. Maybe he wants to keep "dating" before he commits. Those are all things that should be part of the consideration when deciding if this is someone that I want to work with...because in the end, we both need to be happy and secure with our decision to work together.</div>

I've decided that I'm going to do a mix of the antiquated stuff, mailing things by snail-mail and the new stuff, meeting people in person and asking for the business.<br />
<br />
The mail/email part is where things started getting a little tricky.<br />
<br />He asked me what I wanted people to know about The Millionaire's Assistant.<br />
<br />
"I want them to know I get shit done!"<br />
<br />
He asked me if I was prepared to own that statement.<br />
<br />
I explained that I've gone around this barn and played hide-and-seek with my message for a while now and I'm sick of it. Look, the truth is, was and has always been that I get shit done and the people I've enjoyed working with the most aren't afraid or threatened by that phrase and most likely use it themselves frequently.<br />
<br />
We marched forward and at the end of our weekly call, we had a draft of what my script would look like. Sure, we're going to do some tweaking on it later, but, the main thing that struck me was that it's too many words.<br />
<br />
But, this isn't my first time struggling with this issue either. When it came to writing copy for my website, all the "experts" that I consulted believe(d) that it needs to be an extensive amount of information. From the jump, I've asked - who is going to read all this shit? I mean seriously? TL:DR (too long didn't read) has become a way of life in social media for a lot of things, but it's not just for the young "microwave" generation...it's especially for the busy entrepreneur/executive, as well.<br />
<br />
People don't have a lot of time and they don't want to spend it reading a bunch of fluff. They want you to get to the point. Which is part of the reason why I've fallen in love with the website Medium.com - before you commit to reading something, you get to know how long it's approximately going to take for you to read it. Incidentally, it's also the place where I found a couple of posts on this very topic.<br />
<br />
One <a href="https://medium.com/what-i-learned-building/d6a2906611e0" target="_blank">post</a> suggests that you work on condensing whatever message you want to get across to the length of a single tweet - 140 characters. Talk about a challenge! I'm a chatterbox and I haven't even gotten off the ground good in that amount of space. But, that's not what counts for my business.<br />
<br />
Another <a href="https://medium.com/a-path-to-efficiency/52e5d4d69671" target="_blank">post</a>, which I'm using to help fine-tune my message states that you want to give the important points - keep it short, format for clarity, have a clear call to action and be reasonable with the request.<br />
<br />
We're all busy. Time is limited and the old way is dead. Those web pages where you have to scroll and scroll and scroll to get to the meat of the discussion are so antiquated. If that's what you're doing or who you're listening to, you're better off writing blog posts where you can make it as long as you want...I just don't think it's the best way for sales/marketing.<br />

Also, the next time YOU are in a less-than-desirable situation, you should also remind yourself that you don't have to stay there and it's not permanent. YOU can go on to be the next great such-and-such.<br />

Mainly, I think it's rude!<br />

I've been on countless pitch-inars, you know, those "free" webinars that are really an infomercial, where so-called experts will use phrases like "If you're serious about ___" or "If you're REALLY ready to make a change" then you will buy their product or sign-up for their service, etc.<br />
<br />
Those key-phrases just leave a bad taste in my mouth.<br />
<br />
Just because I don't want to spend my money with you or because I'm not jumping up and down like a contestant on the Price is Right doesn't automatically preclude me from being "SERIOUS" about what's going on.<br />
<br />
I'm serious...about my business, my life AND my money! As a result of my seriousness, I am going to take the appropriate amount of time to consider what I want to do with it and that MAY or MAY NOT include you.<br />
<br />
Think about it!<br />
<br />Can you imagine someone in a business meeting with the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Richard Branson or Warren Buffet and telling them "Well, if you're REALLY serious about this, you'll sign the contracts NOW!" I think they'd be promptly shown the door or something would mysteriously come up that pulls Oprah, Richard or Warren out of the meeting.<br />
<br />
Sometimes, a person is going to be able to jump into a situation with a resounding YES and not think twice about it. Other times, it's going to take them a little while to think about or even get more information about something before they make a decision.<br />
<br />
I shouldn't be belittled for being cautious and thoughtful about my money.<br />
<br />
I used to work for a cell phone company. When customers came in the door they were there for 3 reasons, buy a phone, pay a bill, or upgrade an existing account. The serious shoppers had already done their due diligence and would often come with their own comparison sheets on the different cell phone companies. The mere fact that they were in the store said that they were basically leaning towards purchasing with us. All I had to do was smile, be friendly, and answer their questions and I'd close the deal. I had the HIGHEST sales numbers in my store and often in my district. No amount of pressure was required.<br />
<br />
Even if a customer wanted to think it over, shop around or discuss it with their spouse, they often came back because I didn't pressure them. That also led to referrals and when they wanted to add phones, they'd come find me. I don't sell phones anymore, but the basics haven't changed.<br />
<br />
I think that the people who live and do business based on pressure tactics are working from an altered version of reality.<br />
<br />They want you to believe that YOU'RE the problem and not the way they approach you.<br />
<br />
Seriously?!<br />
<br />The alternative to what they're saying is "If you're not going to do business with me, then you must not be serious about your business." (Yes, I've heard someone say that)<br />
<br />
More recently, I was told that "The mature thing to do is just say no if you don't automatically want to say yes."<br />
<br />
Ok, so now, I'm immature by this standard because I haven't made my mind up yet?<br />
<br />
I believe you should treat every amount of money that you spend as if you were spending a million dollars and as such, you should use caution and consideration when making decisions and doing deals.<br />
<br />
An automatic YES does happen. Sometimes, something sounds so good to you on the inside and it FEELS like a wise decision. Other times, your heart and head need a little more time to get in sync with each other. That's ok, too.<br />
<br />
I tell you what though, I appreciate a person who would allow me to take time, even when I don't need it, to make sure I'm making the right choice FAR MORE than I would someone who makes me feel weird about wanting to say no.<br />
<br />
In situations with high-pressure, sales, pushy people, it's important to do what feels authentic to you.<br />
<br />
When you have/offer something that people are wanting, needing and/or hungry for, you don't have to convince them to spend money on it, this is true. When it was time to write the bio for my website, I struggled with it. You want something compelling, to help make the human connection (people do business with people, etc), but, for my ideal clients, I always have to remember to keep it short and to the point because I'm respecting your time.<br />

So, my first version was somewhere in between the two. Then my second version was based on what someone else told me was interesting. Then version number 3 was based on someone saying they don't think anybody cared about a lot of the parts of version 2. And so on and so on.<br />
<br />
I don't know what version it is now. But what I do know is that none of the previous versions were the real DRAW to the site in the first place.<br />
<br />
I also realized last week in conversation with friend that there's so much more to my story than I'd put in my bio, although I think it's important.<br />
<br />
Today, I was asked to write a "Why you" statement and that's when I decided to talk about my whole story and let the chips fall where they may.<br />
<br />

Some people identify it early in life. Others identify it later, but I'll bet you dollars to donuts that if you really take some time to reflect, you will see it.<br />

Have you ever taken the time to observe - I mean REALLY observe a homeless couple? (Talk about random)<br />

I take the train into downtown-ish area every day and there's always a lot of homeless people on or around the train. I made a conscious effort to not be one of those people who is always staring at their phone because you miss a lot of LIFE that way, so I prefer to stand by the window. I don't sit on the train, as a rule, because we do a LOT of sitting already in life and the train ride is never more than 15-20 minutes. I figure it's ok and good for me to stand for that duration.<br />
<br />
So, I'm riding on the train and I look around at the people on the train and I look out the window and I look at people in their cars as we pass them by, they're normally on the phones while driving, and I look at the people at the various stops...and I'm rambling...but stay with me.<br />
<br />
There's a church near my final stop that (I assume by the line each morning) does something along the lines of providing food for the homeless. I always look at that line of people and the people who are leaving and something struck me...which brings me to my point.<br />
<br />
Homeless couples seem to be the most IN LOVE, happy people you'll ever come across. When I see homeless couples on the train or on the street...they just seem so content to be with each other, it's as if their circumstances don't hinder the love. They're often smiling at each other or holding hands or have their arms around each other. Something like that! Not a care in a world. In my mind, they seem to be singing Sonny and Cher, <i>I got you babe!</i><br />

Then I think about other couples that I may see on the train or walking and they seem to be a little less happy and content with each other.<br />
<br />They say that a large portion of divorces are brought on by fights over money. When you're homeless, that's not an issue. Even the homeless couples who have clear signs of a substance abuse problem...there's still a happiness factor to them that you rarely see with people in much financially happier situations.<br />
<br />
I guess Notorious BIG was right - <i>Mo Money, Mo Problems</i>.<br />
<br />
But, what if it didn't have to be that way? What if you had the power to choose to be happy in the situation you're in, with the person you're with WITHOUT all the extra drama? I woke up that morning with all my gratitude and everything, as is my custom, but, things were just off in my house and for a split second, I allowed myself to be ill-at-ease.<br />

The problem with that is that the floodgates open and one itty bitty negative thought turned into a SWELL of negative thoughts and I could hear my heart in the background whispering to me.<br />
<br />
The one thing my head and my heart agreed on was "put on some happy music and smile!"<br />
<br />
So, that's what I did!<br />
<br />

Then, I started thinking of who I could help. You see, I've learned that life sucks sometimes...but it doesn't have to...and one surefire way to make life suck less is to go out and do something nice for someone else. There is ALWAYS someone in a worse situation than you are.<br />
<br />
I went to Starbucks and thought about paying for drinks for the people in the line behind me.<br />
<br />
Then, I noticed a homeless man in the line a few people ahead of me. He wanted a donut, but I don't think he had enough money to buy it, so he settled on getting coffee. The gentleman in the line in front of him paid for the donut, which made me smile!<br />
<br />
I placed my drink order and while I was standing at the bar waiting for it, I noticed the homeless guy over at the condiment stand fixing up his coffee. He had left his donut and his belongings on the table behind me. When nobody was looking, I slipped a $10 under his donut bag on the table and stepped back over to the bar.<br />
<br />
I kept thinking, "I hope he sees it and doesn't toss it in the trash when he's done with his donut." I didn't want to turn around and look at him because I didn't want to give myself away...anonymity is a great thing.<br />
<br />
I can only assume that he found it because I heard him say, "Today is going to be a blessed day!"<br />
<br />
That made me extremely happy!<br />
<br />
I also observed his precision in preparing for his breakfast. He sat with his donut and his coffee placed just so on the table and he had a look like he planned to deliberately enjoy every bit of it. He seemed REALLY happy!<br />
<br />
Everything that happened prior to that just fell away. I didn't care about anything else.<br />
<br />
Complaining is SO easy. It's pretty habitual. Don't fall into the trap.<br />
<br />
When shit happens...and we ALL know it does...look for the most immediate opportunity to do something nice for someone else!<br />
<br />
Here's a list of options that come to mind:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Pay for the car behind you in the toll road</li>
<li>Pay for the car behind you in the drive-thru (thanks Tory Johnson)</li>
<li>Buy a stranger a coffee at Starbucks (or whatever coffee shop)</li>
<li>Make a <a href="http://youtu.be/Y6fkyf9UGAE" target="_blank">$20 backpack</a> to give to a homeless person </li>
<li>Call up the utility company and offer to pay something on the bill of an elderly person</li>
<li>Visit the <a href="http://payitforwardday.com/get-involved/individuals/ideas-on-paying-it-forward/" target="_blank">PayitForward</a> site for other ideas</li>
</ul>

Samuel gives the definition of the words <i>modest</i> (a synonym for humility) and <i>moderate</i> and explains that by the sheer definition of these words, you're doing yourself a disservice by participating in humility...at least in the way it's been encouraged by society.</div>

We've been taught that we shouldn't toot our own horn and to think of ourselves as great is equal to being full of yourself or puffed up. </div>

But, Samuel (and I) would like you to see things from a different angle.</div>

Have you ever tried to work with someone like a coach or expert who was REALLY great at what they do? Normally, the prices for a one-on-one experience have a minimum of 3 zeros BEFORE the period.</div>

Those people may not be quoting Muhammad Ali, "I'm the greatest!" But, they're communicating that very thing with their prices. </div>

In business, we've been taught to allow testimonials to speak for us. Let OTHER people tell a potential client how great you are so you won't seem full of it.</div>

The other day, I was talking to a friend of mine and I told her that I had struggled with my USP (Unique Selling Proposition) for The Millionaire's Assistant. I couldn't readily articulate to you what makes my Personal Concierge service better or different from any other service, other than the fact that it's ME doing it.</div>

She said, "That's it! Your unique selling proposition is YOU!"</div>

It can't be that simple. Can it?</div>

Of course it can!</div>

It takes some work to come out of your shell and learn to toot your own horn and it takes a nice amount of finesse to be able to toot your own horn without sounding like a pompous asshole...but, life is all about balance.</div>

I watched all the drama unfold in the days and weeks following the Richard Sherman thing (something else <a href="http://www.facebook.com/samuel.hersh/posts/2230869689253" target="_blank">Samuel wrote about</a>) and I came to realize that the people who were attacking Richard are probably people who are uncomfortable with their own greatness.</div>

Take a moment to think about it. I mentioned Ali before. You know what he said, "I was saying I was the greatest before I knew I was." But, then, he went on to prove it with his fighting record.</div>

Sherman's stats back up his boasts. </div>

<div>
The other person who comes to mind is Floyd Mayweather. Now, I'm not particularly a fan of his, especially with those domestic abuse allegations and all, but..the man is undefeated. He can talk all the crap he wants when it comes to fighting because he is/was 42-0. Do you know how much WORK it takes to be 42 and 0?</div>

So, think about that and let it sit with you and DEFINITELY read Samuel's post. </div>

Then, find your balance and get rid of the voices of fear, shame and/or doubt that have been keeping you from tooting your own horn. </div>

Embrace your greatness and don't be afraid to talk about it, especially when it counts!</div>

Most importantly, don't look down on those who DO toot their own horns, especially when they have the track record of success that supports their claims.</div>

This year, I'm focusing on the Law of Attraction.<br />

Believe in it, don't believe in it, whatever your choice, I'm not really trying to debate that point with you. The basic premise of it is this - Thoughts become things.<br />
<br />
Plain and simple.<br />
<br />
I'm currently reading "Life Lessons for Mastering the Law of Attraction" and I must say, it's a GREAT read! I plan to finish it before the end of the month.<br />
<br />
In the book, there are all these stories of LOA at work in various people's lives and during one particular story, there is a reference to another book, <i>Excuse Me, Your Life Is Waiting</i> by Lynn Grabhorn.<br />
<br />
In that book, you are asked to write down 30 things that you LOVE about yourself and over a 30 day period, you're to focus on one thing off the list.<br />
<br />
I've been telling my friends and challenging them to write their 30 things down. I have almost 40, which is pretty amazing/cool.<br />
<br />
When you start thinking about the positive things about yourself, it helps you draw attention away from the negative things and that's what we're aiming for here.<br />
<br />
The goal is to fill your mind with great thoughts on a daily basis.<br />
<br />
In the book, the storyteller has "I love my hair" as the first thing on her list and I'll admit, I totally jacked that one because I, too, think I have some great hair!<br />
<br />
My challenge to you is to try and complete your list of 30 things before Saturday, February 1st so that we can start this little journey together.<br />
<br />
If you don't have a whole list by Saturday, that's cool - get as many as you can down and as the time progresses, you will probably have great things to continue to add to your list.<br />
<br />
If you write all 30 things down and on day 2, you can't remember what you wrote, go back to whatever you wrote and mentally repeated on day 1. It's ALL good!<br />
<br />
Some of the other things from my list include:<br />

<li>I love my capacity to love</li>
<li>I love that I'm outgoing</li>
<li>I love that I'm a survivor</li>
<li>I love that I'm honest</li>
<li>I love my sense of humor</li>

Maybe those can help get your juices flowing. There are other people's lists out there on the internet that you can probably gain ideas from as well.</div>

A few days ago, a friend of mine, who is also a well-known blogger, said that the problem is there are far more blogs/bloggers than actual readers. I agree with her on that point and it had me questioning my own blog and my "place in the blogosphere" as they say it.</div>

Following that, I had a conversation with someone where I explained to them how I embrace the duality of who I am - first and foremost, I'm a Gemini and if you believe in that stuff (which I kinda do/don't) you'll understand that duality comes naturally to me. There's Nikki, The Millionaire's Assistant and Nikki, the person aside from The Millionaire's Assistant.<br />

It's like an actor on TV...there's the character they show the audience and there's the person who walks around the house in their underwear in between acting gigs.</div>

I haven't really minded this personality trait/character flaw (depending on which side of the coin you're on) until now. But, for 2014, I decided it's time to introduce both people to each other and the world. There's absolutely no reason I can't be ALL of me and live that out in whatever way suits me in that moment, because at the end of the day, that's what you're trying to do, too, right? You're trying to be you...all of you...all the time.</div>

So, today, as I joined Tumblr - yet another fucking social networking site - I immediately thought about Jay-Z and reminded myself that I'm hustling backwards. In laymen's terms, I'm not being fully authentic to who I am.<br />

The movie <i>Saving Mr. Banks</i> has hit theaters recently and has received quite a bit of criticism about it leaves out important parts of the real story behind how the <i>Mary Poppins</i> movie came to be.<br />
<br />
Personally, I find various levels of inspiration in the true story of the events.<br />
<br />
Let's start with the beginning. The idea of Mary Poppins, originally started in the mind of PL Travers (born Helen) when she was 13 years old and taking care of her siblings. Her father was dead, her depressed mother had gone to drown herself in a creek. It was stormy and her siblings were scared, so Helen made up a story to tell them ad keep their mind off their troubles.<br />
<br />
How many people have ideas that are born out of necessity? In this case, a desire to escape from a downright rotten reality.<br />
<br />
It took 26 years for Helen to complete the story and fully bring Mary Poppins to life. Think about that - TWENTY-SIX YEARS! We live in a time where people are easy to give up on something that doesn't fully develop in 26 minutes - amirite?<br />
<br />
Although the film, Saving Mr. Banks would lead the audience to believe it took 2 weeks for Walt Disney to get PL Travers to agree to making the film, that's hardly the case. It took Disney 20 years to win Helen over.<br />
<br />
Have you ever spent a significant amount of time pursuing a business relationship?<br />
<br />
There's far more to the story, and it's pretty deep. What I wanted to communicate, as you're reflecting on 2013 and making plans for 2014, is that you have to hold on to the dreams you really care about. Sometimes, they don't come true overnight and it's an uphill climb from inception to reality, but, if it's important to you, like the story was for Helen, it's worth every step of the way.<br />
<br />
Additionally, if you are interested in doing something that can better your future or seal your legacy, or any of those other things that Disney had in mind when he started the journey, don't give up just because someone tells you no. If you feel like it's really the right situation for you and/or your business - then you keep going.<br />

It got me thinking about what the goal is in business. I asked myself if my goal was to be popular or to be recognized for a job done well, while being authentic to who I am. For me, the answer is the latter. </div>

I've done a lot of growth over the last year and while I had quite a bit of trepidation, mixed with excitement about being called a <a href="http://myentrepreneurshipdiaries.blogspot.com/2013/03/real-sht.html" target="_blank">Chief Get Shit Done Officer</a>, I realized that I'm completely ok with it because at the end of the day, it's who I am. Clients and friends know that when they need something done, they can call on me.</div>

This also falls right in line with reason number 2 on Linda's list - "<i>I swear like the truck driver's daughter.</i>" I don't know if I swear quite that much, but, I suppose it depends on who you ask and what the situation is. Contrary to the school of thought that using curse words is an example of an unintelligent mind trying to express itself, I know quite a few BRILLIANT individuals who curse from time to time. </div>

There are plenty of people out there making waves for many reasons and it's not hurting their pocketbooks in the end. </div>

Everybody isn't going to like everything you do, nor should they. If you're setting out to please all the people, you're going to drive yourself (and those around you) bat-shit crazy.</div>

So, as the year is coming to an end and it's time to start thinking about what you want to do bigger, better, differently for 2014, you've got less than 2 weeks to ask yourself the tough questions and make the decisions about what you want to do, who you want to be, and what you want to release so that you can be better.</div>

<div>
The thing is, when you are fully yourself, the people who can relate to you will come. It's that authenticity that we hear (and talk) so much about.</div>

There is never a shortage of fun/funny/interesting/weird requests from the people you work with or work for.<br />

So, when I came across this satirical article on <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/sharon-kay-edwards/wanted-personal-assistant_b_4452985.html" target="_blank">HuffingtonPost</a> the other day, I could only laugh. It's a woman who says she's looking for a personal assistant. The job description includes everything from texting for her while she's driving (so she doesn't have to), to scratching her back.<br />
<br />
Some of the requests on the list were pretty normal:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Fetch me a fresh pair of socks when I step in something wet.</li>
<li>Find out why the floor is wet and remedy the problem</li>
<li>Fill the car with gas</li>
<li>Cook breakfast</li>
<li>Help me keep up appearances</li>
</ul>

Those are things that actually resemble what some of us have done as personal assistants.</div>

Then, there are the joking parts of the list:</div>

<li>Finish my Christmas shopping, with your OWN money</li>
<li>Brush my little girl's hair so someone else can be responsible for making her cry</li>
<li>Massage my feet</li>
<li>Provide me with interesting things to write about, then sign over all rights to any intellectual property</li>

Oh, and the BEST part is that she isn't going to pay you.</div>

I will be completely honest. I am a sucker for an accurate personality test.<br />
<br />
I've expressed before that I think it's important for us to know who we are, why we do what we do and who we want to work with.<br />
<br />
So, I was extremely happy when a friend of mine posted about <a href="http://www.ipersonic.com/" target="_blank">another personality test</a> today and I jumped at the chance to take it, which didn't take long.<br />
<br />
I was a little concerned because there are only 4 questions and they group so many various things together, and then I'm to select which of the statements most sounds like me. The results were something that I haven't really thought about in a while.<br />
<br />
Apparently, I am a Groundbreaking Thinker. Imagine that!<br />

This is a statement that really made feel something deep in my soul.<br />

As a young child, I was the "I CAN DO IT" attitude, especially regarding things I've never done before. I'd see a kid on TV skateboarding and I would profess my aptitude for the sport, in spite of never having owned (or even seen in person) a skateboard. I approached most of life that way. As a result of my ambitious and groundbreaking thinking, I won my science fair by creating a model computer while everyone else was doing volcanos. I won my first writing competition by writing an autobiography in the 4th grade and in the 5th grade, I wrote a murder mystery.<br />
<br />
But, as I reflect, I think I lost some of that along the way. Well, obviously not a large amount because of my results on the test. But, I mean I've lost my way in the application of being this personality type, not the theory.<br />
<br />
Now that I know this, I think it's going on the top of my list of things to do for 2014 - Rediscover my inner Groundbreaking Thinker.<br />

Although I am not very interested in yet another social network, I think there is some usefulness to be found with the site.<br />
<br />
First, I searched for groups that are active and have had meetup events that have actually happened in the last month or so, as well as have events currently scheduled to take place in the next month or so.<br />
<br />
There are tons of groups on the site; however, the majority of them are pretty inactive (which is crazy because as an organizer, there's a fee associated with having a meetup group).<br />
<br />
That's when I ran into a problem.<br />
<br />
I began to notice that there was quite a bit of groups that included "Black" in the title. For example, Black Singles, Black Networking, Black Divas, etc.<br />
<br />
I don't like segregation (and I'm definitely not partial to the word "Diva"). With a small exception. I can understand if it was something like Hispanic, Asian, or some other minority because those groups may include cultural, culinary, and language differences that would cause an "outsider" to feel left out.<br />
<br />
Then, I started thinking that if there were groups that said White Singles, White Networking, etc. people would be all up in arms and alerting the news stations.<br />
<br />
I think that part of what makes us better as people, in general is to interact with different people with different ideas. Over the Thanksgiving break, I took some time to watch several <a href="http://www.ted.com/talks" target="_blank">TEDTalks</a> and I took lots of notes. This particular one, from <a href="http://nilofermerchant.com/" target="_blank">Nilofer Merchant</a> inspired me.<br />
<br />
Fact, you're probably sitting in front of your computer while you read this blog post.<br />
<br />
As she states, we spend about 9 hours (sometimes more) a day SITTING!<br />
<br />
Personally, I've become more aware of it, especially because my sitting of choice would be either driving (I love a road trip) or Starbucks (aka The Office) and Barnes & Noble (aka The Satellite Office). In any of these instances, I can spend hours sitting.<br />
<br />
But, this TEDTalk has given me another perspective. We don't have to sit for everything. We don't even have to sit in order to work on our computer - <a href="http://www.officemax.com/office-furniture/desks-laptop-stands/product-prod5310385?cm_mmc=Googlepla-_-Office%20Furniture-_-Desks%20and%20Laptop%20Stands-_-NULL&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=24123397" target="_blank">walking desks</a> anyone?<br />
<br />
What if we spend that same 9 hours of sitting time as walking time? Imagine the health and physical benefits it can have on you?<br />
<br />
Try making small changes. What about standing/walking around while talking on the phone or participating in a phone conference - they don't call them MOBILE phones for nothing, right?<br />
<br />
As Nilofer mentions, when you need to have meetings, why not have walking meetings? As she stated, fresh air can increase fresh ideas?<br />
<br />
I used to work with a great woman who did this very thing. Our office was across from a Starbucks, so when time permitted, she would have a Walk 'N' Talk with someone who requested an audience with her. I think it worked well.<br />
<br />
So, while you're making your plan for 2014 and the things you want to do more of and/or change about the way you conduct your business (and your life), why not add this idea to the list?<br />

I had to wrack my brain for a few moments to remember who the reference was. Then I remembered, it was someone that I had "met" a year ago on LinkedIn. I had a few brief email exchanges with the person last year and hadn't personally heard anything from the person since that time. Now, I'm getting an email from someone they know who thinks we can do business together.<br />
<br />
How odd!<br />

Look, I'm not opposed to establishing advantageous business relationships among your contacts, but I do believe there is a proper way to do it. I definitely don't approve of a person turning over their contact list to someone they kind of know or have done business with.<br />
<br />
I had to email the person who had given out my email address and ask them who this person was that was emailing me, because as you can see, the email is pretty vague. I was told this:<br />

See, this is what I mean. This is the reason why a proper introduction is important. Would it have killed this person to send me this email FIRST and asked if it would be OK for them to share my information with their friend/business associate instead of giving the business associate my contact information and what's called a "cold lead."<br />
<br />
The way this happened left everybody to fend for themselves. Me, to ask who are you and what are you selling. The salesperson, who is trying to sell something to someone they don't know. And the person who should have done the introduction in the first place, because now I'm deleting them from my contacts. (After a year of no interaction, it doesn't really matter)<br />
<br />
As I often say, don't be that person!<br />
<br />
Giving out people's information for the purpose of helping someone else sell something feels kind of grimy and it doesn't sit well with most people (whether they tell you or not).<br />
<br />
I don't know if there were any potential kickbacks involved or if there was any arm-twisting that went into it, but a little warning would have been nice. I had to explain that I'm not in need of any payroll services (a fact that could have been learned by asking me first) and politely thanked them for thinking of me and wished them well in their future pursuits.<br />
<br />
If you know 2 people you think can benefit from knowing each other, it only takes a few minutes to either ask for permission to share their contact information or cc both parties on one email and introduce them to each other. I've only been "scolded" for doing the latter once, and I thought that was odd. I used the person's business email (which was publicly available on their website) to introduce them to someone I thought they'd like to know - especially because they lived a few houses away from each other and worked in the same field - and I got told off in an email for it. That's not normally the response, but I digress.<br />
<br />
Your contacts and your relationship to them should be respected at all times.<br />
<br />

As an entrepreneur, I think that they can come in handy when you're trying to learn more about the person you are planning to work with, as well as yourself. As Susan pointed out, she learned a lot more about herself while taking the tests prior to the blog post.<br />
<br />
After a few personality mismatches, I've been considering implementing a personality test as part of the pre-screening/pre-qualification to work with a new client. But the clients I work with are super-busy people, so getting them to sit still long enough to complete this process would probably be a little bit like pulling teeth.<br />
<br />
I think that when you are planning to do business, especially in one-on-one situations, you may want to know a little bit more about the personality of the other person in the equation. It can help you understand how they work and help you know the best approaches to deal with them on various topics that may arise.<br />
<br />
A few minutes to answer some questions can save everybody some pain and miscommunication in the future. That's just my 2 cents. Check out the tests in the link above and let me know what you learn about yourself in the comments.<br />

I just finished my first e-book. It was a "labor of love" mainly because the new MS Word 365 or 2013, whatever, was giving me the BLUES! (No complaining) It wasn't as user-friendly as I would have liked it to be, but the MS support team was extremely responsive on Twitter and they helped me.<br />

Last night I watched <a href="http://watchabc.go.com/shark-tank/SH559076/VDKA0_0bgytn0m/week-7" target="_blank">Shark Tank</a> and live tweet (while cooking dinner) and the final pitch was probably one of the best and most emotional ones I've seen on there.<br />
<br />
It was Johnny Georges, the owner of a company/product called <a href="http://treetpee.com/" target="_blank">Tree T-Pee</a>. It's an irrigation system for farmers that helps them lower the amount they spend on water and protects the trees. It can save around 24,200 gallons of water a year.<br />
<br />
The best way I can describe Mr. Georges is as a country man who just wants to do the right thing and help people. While I watched his pitch and I watched them ask questions, I realized that almost everything I thought I knew about being true to yourself or "authentic" can probably be tossed out the window.<br />
<br />
He knew his product. He had answers for their questions and explained why he had a winning idea. He told a story about how he gave away 5 of his Tree T-Pees away to a woman who was initially reluctant because he was trespassing on her land. Soon after he left the products on her trees and she had a chance to actually see them in action, she called to place a rather large order.<br />
<br />
Johnny makes these products himself. He doesn't have a large distribution involved. He is only selling in a 5 county area in the state of Florida because that's where he lives and I gathered from what he said, he's doing everything personally. He has a patent on his product and they last roughly 5 years, although he said the oldest one out there was made by his father in 1984.<br />
<br />
It costs him $2.95 to make them. He's made 126,500 of them and he sells them for an average of $4.50 each. He makes $1.00 profit off each one he sells. That's when the rubber hit the road - when the sharks started asking him about distribution and taking the product outside of Florida, he looked a little baffled. He's clearly not a greedy man and Kevin O'Leary didn't understand that concept at all. Mr. O'Leary wanted Mr. Georges to go bigger, get distribution and raise the cost significantly.<br />
<br />
Mr. Georges held his ground. He doesn't do this for the money. He does this for the farmers. It's something he holds dear to his heart and he believes in. He said he's always tried to be right and do the right thing.<br />
<br />
In the end, <a href="http://www.forbes.com/profile/john-paul-dejoria/" target="_blank">John Paul DeJoria</a>, a guest judge on the show, decided to give Mr. Georges exactly what he asked for because he firmly believed in Mr. Georges character and what he was doing. Everyone else was out for profit (rightfully so, because that's what the show is about). Sometimes, some of the other sharks have done the same and given money to people who are looking to just do something good.<br />
<br />
I was reminded of quite a few important things during this presentation and deal:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>You don't have to be who people want you to be in order to be successful. Your definition of success is a personal one.</li>

YAY! Maybe you haven't noticed, but, this is quite a personal accomplishment.<br />

The other day, I came across an article about the "Millionaire Visa" and I thought it was interesting. Apparently, wealthy people from foreign countries can pay for an entry visa into the United States. The cost is $500,000 and the condition is that they create 10 full-time jobs. I'm actually writing more about it on my <a href="http://www.assistantnikki.com/millionaire-residence-visa/" target="_blank">business blog</a> since I work with affluent clients.<br />

When I sent out the tweet, it was pretty matter-of-fact, but, I got a nice response. A few of the people who follow me thought it was interesting and said they wanted to know more.<br />
<br />
This, my friends, is the power of social media. A lot of people don't understand or appreciate social media applications like Twitter or Facebook, but, this occurrence is part of why you should be participating there, if you aren't already. People do actually read what you write and you can get fans/clients based on the things you talk about.<br />
<br />
It's not all about selling, so if that's what you have in mind, let's just forget that part. I've made new friends/fans by talking about some of my favorite TV shows, like <a href="http://myentrepreneurshipdiaries.blogspot.com/2013/03/swimming-with-sharks.html" target="_blank">Shark Tank</a>, which I live tweet every Friday (when it's not a repeat). The other day, I gained new followers because I was tweeting about House Hunters, a show on HGTV that I'd never really watched (or tweet about) before.<br />
<br />
It doesn't matter what you're interested in, but when you start a conversation on social media, you are inviting other people to become part of that conversation (good or bad) and it shares your message with the world. Remember, people do business with people, not nameless/faceless businesses. As a matter of fact, my very first client came from Twitter.<br />
<br />
So, that's all I wanted to tell you today and I wanted to keep it short because it is Halloween. If you have some good social media stories, I'd love to hear from you in the comments.<br />

I was planning to write about something completely different today, but I got wind of this <a href="http://getclientsnow.net/2013/03/21/prospects-you-dont-want/" target="_blank">post</a> from the author of "<a href="http://www.getclientsnow.com/" target="_blank">Get Clients Now</a>" and it resonated so heavily with me, I figured the other post can wait.<br />
<br />
As entrepreneurs, we get excited when the phone rings or the email buzzes. It means that there is a potential for money in the bank. But, it's not just about making money or accepting anyone who wants to buy from you - remember, we're not <a href="http://myentrepreneurshipdiaries.blogspot.com/2013/05/the-importance-of-knowing-your-target.html" target="_blank">Wal-Mart</a>.<br />
<br />
There are some people that you just don't want to deal with. They are a pain in the a** coming in the door, which means they're probably going to be a PIA throughout the relationship. You should avoid these people like the PLAGUE. It's important to know the warning signs so that you can run the other way.<br />
<br />
C. J. does a great job of highlighting those signs for you. Here's the run-down:<br />

<ol>
<li>The prospect who comes in asking for a discount. They tell you that they'd REALLY love to work with you, but they can't afford your price. They may not be asking for a discount up-front, but ultimately, this is what they're asking. C. J. points out that these people don't value you as a professional (I'd add) or as an entrepreneur. </li>
<li>The prospect with the revolving door. They tell you how they've worked with several people in the past and none of them have been the right fit. Now, you can choose to put your cape on like Superman and think that you're going to come in and show everybody how it's done, but chances are they are hard/impossible to please and they're going to be telling the next hopeful the same line, but this time, your name has been added to the list. There's a reason plastic surgeons don't work with people who have had multiple same surgeries before or people who have sued 1 or more of their previous doctors. It's not good business.</li>
<li>The prospect who wants a discount now and promises to send you TONS of business in the future. Yeah, right! How about you pay my regular rate now and then, in the future when you send me all this business, I can give you some kind of loyalty or referral discount. </li>
<li>The frantic prospect. You've been trying to contact them, they haven't been responding and all of a sudden they have some emergency and want you to drop everything and help them. Let's not go forming any bad habits. Everyone's time is valuable here!</li>
<li>The prospect who doesn't have time to pay you up front, but wants you to start work anyway. Money talks. Serious people speak that language. When it gets to the money part of the deal and they've got problems and excuses, you're setting yourself up for failure.</li>
</ol>

Other people on the list include the people who want to have several meetings without closing the deal, people who only want to speak to references with projects EXACTLY LIKE THEIRS, people who want you to do things that aren't specifically part of what you do, people who want to increase the scope of work after you've already quoted pricing, and the non-committed prospect who wants you to block off your calendar for them.</div>

OMG! I think I've dealt with <a href="http://myentrepreneurshipdiaries.blogspot.com/2013/10/my-picker-is-off.html" target="_blank">2 people recently</a> that cover all 10 of the people on this list, that's why this was so urgent for me to cover right away. We want to see the best in people and we want to do business with people because we like them or we know them, but, as <a href="http://myentrepreneurshipdiaries.blogspot.com/2013/10/barneys-and-jay-z.html" target="_blank">Jay-Z said</a>, business is not about emotions.</div>

One thing I learned pretty early about being an entrepreneur is that marketing is important for getting the phone to ring. The other thing I learned, that's more specific to what I do, is that all marketing is NOT created equal.<br />

I've spoken with my fair share of "marketing experts" and they would like me to believe that marketing is marketing is marketing, but that's simply NOT TRUE. My clients are affluent busy businesspeople and you just can't market to them the same way you market to everyone else. Don't believe me? Here's a question - when's the last time you've seen a Coca-Cola commercial on TV? Probably recently, right? Ok, now, when's the last time you've seen a commercial for Rolex or Audemars Piguet or Lamborghini or Hermes or Alexander McQueen on TV?<br />

You probably didn't come up with an answer for that because all marketing is NOT the same. Higher end brands like Rolex, Audemars and Lamborghini don't advertise on television. They do advertise in publications that also cater to their target demographic. This is proof-positive that all marketing is not the same.<br />
<br />
Years ago, the top marketing methods were direct mail, TV and radio spots. Today, most people throw unsolicited mail in the trash, DVR shows so they can skip commercials, or listen to their MP3 player instead of the radio. So, it's important to come up with creative ways to meet your client-base.<br />
<br />
One of the ideas I had was to go out to Open Houses (generally on Sunday) and meet high-end realtors because they're selling homes in the price range that my ideal clients are buying. This is a great way to get to know people, have face-to-face interaction and build the like, know, trust factor that is necessary in doing business. If the realtor likes me and the client likes the realtor, it makes the gap between me and the client a little smaller. It's all about relationship-building.<br />
<br />This is just something to think about. If you're out there <a href="http://myentrepreneurshipdiaries.blogspot.com/2013/10/motivation-week-eric-thomas-how-bad-do.html" target="_blank">hustling</a> or <a href="http://myentrepreneurshipdiaries.blogspot.com/2013/10/you-are-not-driver.html" target="_blank">grinding</a> or even praying to get business, opening yourself up to opportunities for the right people to come your way is extremely important. Having a website is great, but unless you are or hire an SEO wiz, it's just not enough to bring people in the door.<br />
